The saints left behind most of what they had to cross the plains, many of them suffering greatly, even burying loved ones in shallow graves. The sacrifices were unspeakable. We in this day and age are not asked to make such tangible sacrifices; our trials are black and white. Those people had a choice: either follow the prophet and go, or cling to their comforts and stay. We have a choice: either follow the prophet and keep moving forward, or cling to our comforts and stay put. For us it's not physically required to leave out homes, but perhaps it's a series of emotional sacrifices we are called upon to make. We say that we could never have endured the hardships of the pioneers, but I wonder if they could have endured the complicated world we live in, assaulted by Satan's evil in every side. I'm certain that most of those people reached a point where they just wanted to sit down on the trail and say "I'm not going another step." But somehow they kept going. For us, we don't have to literally keep walking, but we do have to keep going. And this is why we need to have faith in every footstep.
